Pre-Award and Post-Award Processes. The following guidance may assist you in developing a strong application that allows reviewers to better evaluate the science and merit of your proposal. The tips should not replace your organization's internal guidance, specific advice provided by NIH program or grants management staff, or instructions found in the funding opportunity announcement or application guide.
Application forms are posted with each funding opportunity announcement. Careful preparation and an understanding of how your application will be reviewed can help you build a solid application. Although a number of factors contribute to whether your application will be funded, we place great emphasis on the review of scientific merit.
The following sections describe the criteria reviewers employ to evaluate applications. Read them carefully for helpful hints on the information and content you should include in the application to garner a favorable evaluation.
Reviewers will provide an overall impact score to reflect their assessment of the likelihood for the project to exert a sustained, powerful influence on the research field s involved, in consideration of the following review criteria, and additional review criteria as applicable for the project proposed. Reviewers will consider each of the review criteria below in the determination of scientific and technical merit, and give a separate score for each. An application does not need to be strong in all categories to be judged likely to have major scientific impact.
For example, a project that by its nature is not innovative may be essential to advance a field. Does the project address an important problem or a critical barrier to progress in the field?
Is there a strong scientific premise for the project? How will successful completion of the aims change the concepts, methods, technologies, treatments, services, or preventative interventions that drive this field?

If established, have they demonstrated an ongoing record of accomplishments that have advanced their field s? Does the application challenge and seek to shift current research or clinical practice paradigms by utilizing novel theoretical concepts, approaches or methodologies, instrumentation, or interventions?
Are the concepts, approaches or methodologies, instrumentation, or interventions novel to one field of research or novel in a broad sense?
Is a refinement, improvement, or new application of theoretical concepts, approaches or methodologies, instrumentation, or interventions proposed? Are the overall strategy, methodology, and analyses well-reasoned and appropriate to accomplish the specific aims of the project?
Have the investigators presented strategies to ensure a robust and unbiased approach, as appropriate for the work proposed? Are potential problems, alternative strategies, and benchmarks for success presented? If the project is in the early stages of development, will the strategy establish feasibility and will particularly risky aspects be managed? Have the investigators presented adequate plans to address relevant biological variables, such as sex, for studies in vertebrate animals or human subjects?
Will the scientific environment in which the work will be done contribute to the probability of success?It includes helping teachers prioritize essential content and skills and design sentence-level activities that reinforce and assess key content while developing writing, oral language, reading comprehension and thinking all at once.

The council also distributes information on various seminars held across campus. K-State graduate students and post-docs who attend at least five professional development events hosted by GSC during the academic year will be recognized with a GSC Professional Development Certificate.
Only the events listed below count for credit toward the certificate. For each event you attend, you will be asked to complete an event feedback survey.
You must complete the survey to earn credit for attending an event. Due to K-State's efforts to mitigate spread of coronavirus and limit in-person activities, the GSC Awards and Recognition Reception has been canceled.
Students who fulfill requirements for the professional development certificate will still receive a certificate. Due to extreme limitations of people on campus, it is unlikely that hard copy certificates will be distributed until staff are permitted to return to campus. In the meantime, the GSC will work to distribute electronic certificates. Students who did not complete requirements in time to have the certificate presented to them at the GSC Awards and Recognition Reception should email Priscila Guzman pguzman ksu.
Priscila will confirm completion of requirements and will notify the student when their certificate is available for pick-up. The GSC attempts to video record as many seminars as possible.
Students who are unable to attend seminars in person may earn the GSC Professional Development certificate by viewing seminar video recordings and completing the seminar feedback survey. Viewing videos of seminars held in previous academic years will not count as credit toward requirements for the Professional Development Certificate. The assignment of your application to a specific Institute or Center usually takes about a week to appear in the Commons, but the assignment to your specific program officer will take longer, and an interim program officer assignment may appear in the Commons for some time. Watch for email notifications. The assignment of your application to a specific review committee and scientific review officer SRO may also take about a month or so to appear in the Commons.
It is advisable to wait until you see an SRO assigned in the Commons to find out where your application has been assigned for review. The assignment and the contact information for the SRO will be reflected in the Status. Before the review takes place, any questions about the review process should be directed to the SRO, whose contact details are reflected in Status.
